The Dancer Behind “Lemon”
Just after N.E.R.D. and Rihanna released their surprise single “Lemon,” people started to question who the star of the video was—you know, the one that gets her head shaved by Rihanna and then goes on to deliver an unforgettable choreographed performance. The woman is Mette Towley, a dancer that has previously worked with Pharrell on his 2013 project, Girl. Although Towley’s performance appears seamlessly natural, the video was entirely choreographed by JaQuel Knight with help from Pharrell’s collective. In an interview with The FADER, Towley commented on her experience working with N.E.R.D., claiming that they’re “a group that transcends any single genre, I think as a dancer, I was pushed to do the same thing.” She then went on to note how special the opportunity was: “I had freedom to be myself and express who I am in my body. That's just a dream for a dancer.” Watch Towley's performance below.
“Shameless” Renewed for Season 9
Following the Season 8 premiere this past Sunday, Showtime announced that hit series “Shameless” will be renewed for a ninth season. The Season 8 debut on Sunday brought in over 1.80 million viewers, marking the show’s highest rating since Season 3. Over the past several years, “Shameless” has proved to be Showtime’s most successful series. The CEO and President of Showtime pinpointed the reason for the show’s success in a statement: “But it’s no mystery why. The series’ reputation for rich and resonant characters and for deep – and deeply twisted – comedy has drawn not only faithful longtime viewers, but a steadily growing audience. And creatively, the season that kicked off this past Sunday is stronger than ever.” Creation of “Shameless’” ninth season will commence in 2018. You can watch the first seven seasons of “Shameless” on Netflix.
Kehlani’s Tech Startup
After the release of her album SweetSexySavage earlier this year, Kehlani has turned her efforts to the tech startup scene. Early this week, the Oakland native announced that she has landed a $50,000 investment for her tech startup, Flora. Flora will strive to provide health and wellness information for a younger audience through the use of “curated green content.” The investment is coming from a firm called Backstage Capital, an institution that focuses on projects by people of color. Kehlani expressed her enthusiasm for the project on Instagram, stating “I can’t wait to share this idea, I haven’t believed in something like this in a while. Proud to say we joined forces with a woman specifically looking to support queer/POC/women, it’s more than key for our mission to have lined up than anything in the world.”
Finn Wolfhard Fires Back
With the second season of "Stranger Things" hitting Netflix, all focus has been on the young cast. However, according to Finn Wolfhard, not all the attention has been positive. Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler in the series, called out to fans on Twitter to stop harassing his co-workers and friends. It is not known what specifically prompted Wolfhard to call out his fans for their negative comments. Wolfhard ended his series of tweets with some words of wisdom, “Think b4 ya type boiiii.” See the tweets below.
